O’Connell started his acting career at a young age doing commercial work for Duncan Hines cookies. At the age of 11, he landed his first feature film role playing the role of Vern Tessio in Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me. He then appeared in the 1987 commercial for Frosted Flakes. From 1988 to 1991, he starred in the Canadian science fiction sitcom My Secret Identity as the teen hero who develops superhuman traits.
